I'm annoyed when people think I'm talking about ELF.

I'm more annoyed when people say that ALF was a horrible show even for the 80's. Do they even remember the 80's? ALF might have had a pretty typical 80's family except for Willie being a little eccentric, but I believe the character was before it's time. You bring out a movie like Ted and everybody thinks it's genius (while I admit I highly enjoyed it as well), but ALF was more or less a toned down version of this character. The only real difference being that times have changed so much. Back then things such as ALF drinking beer was seen as too risky by the network.

Accusing ALF of being a rip-off of Mork and Mindy.
Asking "What's ALF?"
Assuming that because ALF is a puppet that the show was just a kids' show.
Calling ALF a knock-off of the Muppets.
