Well, ALF is obviously back in the public consciousness. Here is an article that was on Cracked.com.

It paints a bleak picture of ALF, but I get the satire of it.

Anyone who reads Cracked.com knows this isn't the first time they picked on Alf for being bleak.

Yeah, I think the obvious answers to their questions are:
-ALF is called ALF because it's a TV show and it's catchy and has something that fans can explain to other people (that it means Alien Life Form). It's not realistic that they would continue to call him this, but it works for the show.
-ALF's planet exploding is a plot device that requires him to stay with the Tanner family. This fact is also used to make commentary about Earth's problems - nuclear war, etc. The psychological ramifications on ALF because of this are not what most episodes are meant to be about.
-Most importantly, it's a comedy and should be enjoyed for its humor, not analyzed to death. (although I'm guilty of this sort of thing from time to time).
