Great article that ended up rather abruptly. I'm really surprised by this part:
While looking back on that period, Wright recalls that during the first season of ALF, "everybody wanted out after the first nine weeks. The scripts were mostly just jokes, not the dramatic matrix. It didn't make any sense. I don't know how it ever caught on."
The situation improved after a fresh team of writers was brought in, and still another writing team has been chosen for this season.
I think the first season is the best and I love the early episodes a lot. The show caught on because it was hilarious, IMO.

yeah, that part kind of made me sad too, but just about every sitcom as a rough start because it has to capture an audience. while i can agree season 1 does have some good episodes but some episodes a really rough around the edges and make a lot of loopholes within the own show. but glad at least it went past it's hardships and gave us at least 3 more seasons.
let's face it, I'm unforgettable!
