ALF-Greeting card from Germany, 1988

Post by AlfAlfa_26 »

My father got this ALF-Greeting card by his parents for his 17th birthday in October 1988. ALF had just started airing in January of the same year over here in Germany and my father, aged 16, had instantly become a fan. As my parents told me, ALF was huge here in Germany: there was merchandise in all forms to find at any store; it was an icon like Mickey Mouse etc.

The card is very big, bigger than A4. It has ALF on the front cover, saying his german catchphrase in a speech bubble.
For your information, everytime ALF sais "no problem" in english, he sais "Null Problemo" in german, though the correct translation would have been "Kein Problem". But "Null Problemo" is meant to emphasize his easygoing attitude because it is incorrect german, as maybe an immigrant from a romance language speaking country could have tried to express the meaning of "Kein Problem"(I am from such an immigrant family(from Portugal) myself, and we never thought of it as being offensive). "Null" is the german word for "Zero" and the added "o" to the word "Problem" indicates a romance language. It sort of has become a proverb in Germany that people use, while some of them may not know its origin from the series.
Because "Null Problemo" is asked by ALF on the front cover of the card, it is answered in the inside with "Alles klar!", which literally translates to "All clear!" but actually means something like "Everything´s fine!". (I have whitened out the private text that was written by my late grandmother for my father)
On the backside you can see that it was officially licensed by Alien Productions and distributed by the "Taunus-Grußkarten-Verlags-GmbH".

Pretty cool. I think ALF greeting cards weren't really mass-produced in the states (I'm not sure, as I wasn't around back then), but it might have been different internationally. Still a rare piece. Glad that your father saved it :D .
