The voice, of course, was always Paul Fusco. The difference at the beginning of season one (you can tell by watching the pilot episode) is that the voice is "rougher" (I'm really not exactly sure how else to describe it...maybe someone else can chime in with a good word or two) at the beginning of the series. ALF's voice later becomes more "pleasant" sounding...why? I'm really not sure, perhaps to appeal to children? It could also be that Paul Fusco just "naturally" tweaked the voice over the first part of the season and later found the "sweet spot" in the voice. Perhaps someone knows a little more than I do (I'm sure ALFanatic will have some info on this as well). Sorry for my overuse of the quotation marks

Admin,
Sorry, I am unable to offer any additonal information as to why the noticeable change in ALF's voice during the early episodes of Season One. As for personal speculation, I am inclined to believe decision may have been made to tone down the "East Coast" accent and attempt to make the voice more generic.
If we are ever able to renew Q&A with Paulf Fusco, "Why the change in ALF's voice?" would be a good question for the top of the list.
