Forum Upgrade

Post by Admin »

Hey all,

I just wanted to inform you that the forum software is being upgraded from phpBB2 to phpBB3. What this means is more features, and above all enhanced security. The one downside is that old posts (from the old software) will not show up when a search is done.

I would like to publicly thank "Alfster" for his help in this, as it was his idea and skills that made the upgrade possible. He is currently working on the layout/template.

Also, please be patient as some things are in a state of "disarray" and should be fixed shortly.

The search function will become populated as we post again. There is a way to repopulate the search but at the moment I am working on the layout/functions.

quick poll

we will be using the default template of prosilver customized to match alftv.net I wanted to know if you guys like the User info panel on the right side(default) or do you want it on the left (traditional) either can be done.

Personally, I prefer the left.

I think its going to be difficult getting used to this set-up. I dont like it....I miss the new topic scroll on the top. Is there anyway we can put that back up???

I'm not a big fan of changes, but this time it was necessary and I'll live with it.

BUT, is this the way the forum will look like from now on? I'm talking about the skin. I've grown quite fond of the space background, it's classic ALF to me as many other fansites on the net has that background as well.

I do plan to have the scrolling topics feature back up soon, and a few other small things. The new forum software was necessary, as this forum has been hacked about a dozen times, and the old template is not compatible with the new software.

I know it will take some getting used to, but it is definitely for the better.

In the meantime, you can still access the scrolling topics feature from the mainpage http://www.alftv.net/ or you can click on "View new posts", which is next to your private messages box.

I'll upload the space background later and see what it looks like...might be neat!

Oh, and I'll also be working on integrating a chatroom (I've been searching the phpBB.com website for something I can do).

I think you have all noticed the additional changes today. Things that are still in the works:

1) The user info will be on the LEFT side instead of the right (as that is what you are all probably used to)

2) Chat room - in progress

3) Menu options will be working within a day or two

4) Extra space in the posts (look above this post) - not sure what that is from

Thank you again to Alfster! With the old forum software I would have had about 50 spam registrations and whatnot, so far, ZERO. This new software has already proven to be safer, and full of many more options than the old software. With time I'm sure everyone here will begin to like it.

Thanks everybody!

Loving the new forum upgrade! I agree that it is not as spacey as we are used to but it is a pretty good upgrade and it's nice on the eyes. ALF would be proud!
